In the days leading up to the event the Race Committee was aware that cross-winds were forecast and could lead to problems attaching to the start pontoons; this was confirmed by reports from Wallingford Regatta the previous day.

In the morning the time-trials ran without incident; the wind was not causing safety issues and so it was decided to proceed with all finals using the “quick start”.  A very experienced team was on hand at the start to assist crews.  However after an hour of racing the delays had built up and it was clear that the programme could not be completed within the time available.  A number of options were considered but the only one which the umpires were confident would allow prizes to be awarded in all events and racing to be completed by 19:00 was to cancel those B and C finals which had not yet boated.  This resulted in a safe regatta which finished ten minutes after the projected finish time.

The Trustees and Race Committee understand the disappointment of those who qualified for a B or C final but were unable to race.  However a number of coaches and parents expressed their disappointment in ways that were unacceptable.  The JSR, like all regattas, is run by volunteers, most of whom are very experienced and sympathetic; shouting at officials does not help any party and sets a poor example to the junior competitors.
