Grants to Promote Junior Sculling in the UK
In addition to running two flagship events, the Scullery is able to offer grants that aim to improve the racing opportunities and technical coaching offered to young scullers.
From 2025-6 these grants will take two forms:
- Project grants offered to organisations
- Support for individual coaches
Project grants
The Scullery offers grants to organisations running projects or events that will contribute to the development of Junior Sculling in the UK. In most years there are five grants available of up to £1,000 each; larger grants may be made for exceptional projects.
Suitable projects might, for example, include a skills programme for sculling coaches, a regatta that fills a gap for Juniors in the rowing calendar, or a learn to scull course for young people who are not from a traditional rowing background. See below for a list of projects we have funded in recent years.
Grants are not usually made for the following:
- Learn to row courses run annually by clubs as a fundraising project or for general intake of members;
- Club or school camps;
- Projects for large well-funded organisations;
- Running costs of established organisations or ongoing projects;
- Organisations outside the UK.
Applications should be made using the Project Grant application form below. Closing date for applications 1st May 2026, with decisions to be advised by 1st June 2026.
Support for junior sculling coaches
Junior girls and boys now enter sculling events in approximately equal numbers and the Trustees want to encourage such parity to be extended to coaching at all levels.
The Scullery will consider funding coach training courses (e.g. Level 2) but wants to ensure that coaches it funds continue to coach junior sculling; coaches who apply for these courses should commit to coaching for their existing club/school for at least two years. We would also encourage individuals who have been funded in this way to apply for Level 3 or equivalent courses, and we will consider favourably further applications from those individuals to fund their coach development needs.
The Scullery also works with British Rowing to support coaches on its Coach Development Programme, which runs from January to December each year and prioritises women, those from non-traditional backgrounds and coaches trying to deliver something new (see https://www.britishrowing.org/knowledge/courses-qualifications/coach-development/). Note that the Scullery will only support coaches of junior scullers.
Applications should be made using the Coach Development Support application form below. Applications may be made at any time (specifying the date by which a decision is required); however the Trustees are likely to need at least four weeks to reach a decision.
